How to apply

All of the following information has been taken directly from the UTSA Graduate Admissions site, as well as the site for the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Application requirements for the Physics Doctoral Program

  1. GRADUATE SCHOOL APPLICATION

    The general application, to be completed online, is for consideration of admittance to the UTSA Graduate School. For an overview of the steps to complete the application, please go through the Graduate School Application Instructions.


  2. APPLICATION FEE

    The application fee is a one-time fee that is nonrefundable. It is paid through the online graduate admissions application system.

    • Non-UTSA graduates applicants: $50
    • International applicants: $90

    The application fee can also be paid online through the UTSA Application Fee Payment Page.


  3. TRANSCRIPTS

    Submit official transcripts from all institutions you attended, including community colleges. The official transcript must indicate the completion of a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution or its equivalent from an institution outside of the US. The official transcript will indicate the type of degree and the date earned. In order for your academic documents to be official, they must be in a sealed envelope with the school seal or signature on the back side of the envelope.

    For international applicants, a degree certificate, provisional certificate, or diploma is required along with your official transcripts. Submit all official transcripts in their original language along with certified English translations. The academic institution or government agency must perform the translation services.

  4. TEST SCORES

    For all, General GRE scores are required. Physics GRE scores are strongly recommended, but not required.

    For international applicants,TOEFL and IELTS test score are required.

  5. UNIVERSITY LEVEL CREDIT FROM FOREIGN INSTITUTIONS

    U.S. Citizens (Domestic) or permanent residents who have earned university level credit from foreign institutions are required to submit all official transcripts from foreign institutions along with an evaluation of the transcripts from a foreign credential agency. An approved evaluation requires a detailed course-by-course evaluation. Summaries will not be accepted.

    The Foreign Credentials Service of America (FCSA) is a private corporation that provides evaluations of foreign school credentials. If you need a request form, click on Application Information and Instructions, scroll down to item 7 and click on Printable FCSA form.


  6. ADDITIONAL MATERIALS

    These supplementary materials are uploaded with the general application:

    1. Minimum 2 letters of recommendations,
    2. Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    3. Statement of purpose.

    Each letter of recommendation is to be from person familiar with the applicant's undergraduate (and graduate, where applicable) scholastic record.


  7. OTHER ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    International students and those with international degrees may be required to submit additional documents per our admissions policies and procedures. The Graduate School reserves the right to request any additional documents needed to fairly and consistently evaluate applicant credentials.

After Applying

To check your status, you may email the GraduateAdmissions@utsa.edu to determine what application items have or have not been received. Be proactive about keeping up with the admissions process! Class Enrollment

A student account will have been created upon admission and acceptance into UTSA. A UTSA banner ID and myUTSA ID will be generated to use to access the Automated Student Access Program (ASAP) and other myUTSA applications. Class registration and records, payment of tuition and fees, payment for parking permits and tickets, ordering transcripts, and course evaluations are all done through ASAP.
